Following a diagnosis of lung cancer, artist Paul Benjamins began a series of sketches as a visual diary. After his death, his wife Jacqui wanted to reproduce the drawings as a special edition book that could be sold to raise money for the hospice that had cared for him in at the end of his life.
Drawn in irregularly sized ring-bound sketchbooks – we opted to photograph rather than scan the artworks. This allowed us to show the paper backgrounds and gave us more control of light. But doing this demanded much thought and time balancing backgrounds as well as retouching colour.
