Varnishing Day: A Moment in Time is a collective artwork conceived by David Mach RA and Hughie O’Donoghue RA, featuring the work of 100 Royal Academicians—ranging from Antony Gormley RA to Yinka Shonibare RA.
In 2020, as the UK entered its first lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition was postponed for the first time in 252 years, along with Varnishing Day.
Traditionally, Varnishing Day is when Academicians whose works are featured in the Summer Exhibition gather to celebrate and add final touches to their pieces before the exhibition opens the following day. For Varnishing Day: A Moment in Time, 100 Academicians, all in isolation in their homes and studios, created an artwork on Varnishing Day 2020 to express their thoughts and feelings during this unprecedented period.
This work serves as a collective artistic response to the Coronavirus Pandemic and acknowledges the contribution made to the RA by the Friends of the Royal Academy.
