Gilbert & George’s work has confounded all attempts at art historical classification or affiliation. Firmly rooted in their self-professed ethos of ‘Art for All’, this major retrospective spans their work from the turn of the century to the present day.
Spanning 25 years, the pictures are provocative, humorous, confrontational, loving, subversive and ultimately, timeless. Overflowing with both hope and fear, filled with humanity and addressed always (and in all ways) to the complexity of modern life with all its human contradictions and desire.
21ST CENTURY PICTURES presents the latest chapter in a story that has been unfolding since 1967. This latest contemporary landscape an exploration of society’s archetypes that are both sacred and profane.
The book includes essays by long time friend Michael Bracewell as well as the Hayward Curator Rachel Thomas and an in-depth interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist. The book is introduced by Hayward Director, Ralph Rugoff.
