Humphrey Ocean: Monograph

Commissioned by : Humphrey Ocean & Royal Academy

Outline

Working closely with the artist in his studio, we were honoured to create the first Monograph for painter, printmaker, and sculptor Humphrey Ocean RA. The monograph was two years in the making and spans Humphrey’s work from his early days all the way to his professor perceptive at the Royal Academy of Arts. This book is filled with Hurtwood hallmarks of quality such as Swiss binding and typography in slick black foil blocking. It covers painting, drawing and sculpture and is a comprehensive work.

The Challenge

Humphrey’s work is deeply satisfying to work on as it is a challenge to reproduce well. Whilst seeming to be gentle colour it is, in fact, very precise with defined colour shifts each of an exact shade – often grey. Alongside this, the design team had requested a Swiss-bound book with sections neatly divided by single leaves of Colorplan paper. To accommodate this we worked out a very specific imposition scheme (the process of arranging the pages of the book) to ensure the two-page tip-ins are placed between sections.
